Chapter 9

She decided to bring it up at lunch the next day. “I think I have trust issues.”

“Oh?” Eric set the newspaper down. Amy had tried to get him to read the newspaper on the tablet, but he still hadn’t warmed up to that aspect of mobile computing. Instead, he only used it to play games and check his email.

“I have been having all this chaos going on in my head. Like the whole you taking liberties thing. Yes, you were doing that, but it was made worse by my own insecurities. It’s the same thing with doing a public scene at the club. Obviously I have no qualms with an open relationship, or sex with multiple people, but strangers and groups of people are an issue. Feeling vulnerable in front of them makes me uncomfortable and I think it’s because I don’t trust our future. I am not sure I trust you as much as I should.”

She paused to gauge his reaction.

He listened intently and said nothing.

“That’s what it comes down to. I need to know our future so I can plan my life. Women nest, it’s what we do. We’re planners. We can’t live in the moment with the future being uncertain because it’s just not how we’re wired. I know you tell me you love me and I love you, too, but I need some certainty. Without that certainty, I’m having a hard time fully trusting us, and giving myself to you completely.” This time she looked at him with expectation. He had to respond with something.

He paused then gave her a single nod. “You’ve given this a lot of thought.”

“Yeah.”

“You do realize that I could lie to you right now and tell you exactly what you want to hear. Do you think you would trust me more then?”

“No,” she admitted.

“You want something tangible.”

He hit the nail on the head there. “I suppose I do.”

A sigh escaped his lips. “I’d like to think on this before I respond to it. In the meantime, I’ve scheduled our scene that you agreed to do, three days from now.”

All she could do was blink. It wasn’t the reaction she expected. To be honest, she wasn’t sure what she expected. Her heart sank. Maybe she was being unfair to demand so much from him. No, she firmly decided, she needed to voice her needs to him. If they weren’t on the same page, it was better if they parted ways, which would leave her without a home, a car, and without a job. Fear gripped her stomach.

Then he added, in an equally cool tone, “I have some work to do later. But let’s do something light for dinner tonight.”

That was it? She looked at her hands, wondering if she should say something, but she didn’t. Instead she got up from the table and retreated upstairs to the bedroom. She needed some time alone with her depression. She got into bed and stared up at the ceiling, trying to imagine what was going through Eric’s mind.
